JAMES BROWN TRIBUTE 27.01.07

January 25th, 2007

This is the first major event Mama Feel Good! is presenting since running a monthly residency at The Bull’s Head in Moseley, Birmingham. We are hoping it will be a successful, fun, memorable party for all the Brummies paying tribute to Mr. Dynamite.

On Christmas day, after a couple of melancholy texts sent re JB, Amy and I decided to put on the tribute party and started pestering people on Boxing Day via Myspace.

Although Amy and I are funk Djs, we both have quite a solid background in the arts, I studied classical music and am studying Community Arts with the City Council and Amy did Theatre studies and has an Arts Project Management Masters, so we have a fair idea of what is needed to put on a successful event. We did however draw from the experience of our mates at Jibbering Records and musician friends to point us in the right direction in regard to equipment hire and sound engineering.

There has been quite a learning curve in terms of events management, pros and cons. Also, being women in this very male dominated field has made it quite an eye- opener. Sometimes you simply have to smile and let the gob-pooh go over your head ;)

Progress report:

31.12.06 Email musos and DJs around Brum about the JB Tribute idea wanting as many people involved as possible.
01.01.07 New Year’s early morning, around 6am; informal chat with the Peka the owner of The Unit about using his space. He loves the idea! A keen member of Dynamite Souls; Dibs, contacts Mama Feel Good! to arrange some bboys to come and dance, it starts to get even more exciting!!
3.01.07 Whilst sat in Jibbering Records drinking tea, meet most the musicians and sound people I need. Jibbering Dan gives useful information regarding equipment hire for musicians.
3.01.07 Rinse the phone, booking musicians and DJs. Jibbering Oli is onboard the events management team.
4.01.07 Meeting with Tom Tebby re flyer design.
9.01.07 Make tickets with a little help from Jibbering Oli. Some artists suggest the money is given to charity. So MFG has a meeting to discuss what to do with potential profits.
10.01.07 Flyers are printed.
11.01.07 Email eflyer to mates. Start flyering relevant nights around Brum.

14.01.07 Delegate DJ Dr.Tra the role of decorating our venue, and she suggests one of her ‘writer’ mates do some JB graffiti art!
11.01.07 Original VJ is poorly so through lack of contact arrange with some friends to put some JB images on DVD.
12.01.07 Intense flyering.
22.01.07 Saad gives Sister 45 JB DVD of JB images.
23.01.07 Amy and Hen buy material and beers for musos. JB Raffle prizes are bought.
